What makes the best paper shooting target?
The best paper shooting target is one that incorporates a wide variety of training scenarios as well as forces you to push beyond your normal boundaries. Most often we go to a range and simply group a few rounds then follow it with some quick shooting and call it a day. The Essentials Target is designed to offer you a wide variety of training options, especially when paired with the Essentials Shooting Guide.
Free Printable Shooting Targets
Printing your own targets can be an option if you’re looking for a cheep alternative to buying or you just can’t wait until your shipment of RE Factor Tactical Essentials Targets comes in. RE Factor Tactical offers free printable targets here, featuring an 8”x11” version of the Kill Zone, IQ Rifle, IQ Pistol, and Essentials Targets. Remember, just because it’s free doesn’t mean it can’t be a valuable training tool at the range.
The free Kill Zone Target is anatomically correct to the size of a human head, so while it may be a free product, it’s also very realistic, giving the shooter an idea of how your shot placement affects the human body, specifically the head in this case. If you’re using a full-sized Kill Zone Target, you can see the entire upper torso, which is great when running the 5x5 drill as seen below.
The free printable IQ Target for both rifle and pistol are designed to go great with the Dead Man’s Hand Shooting Deck and get the shooter thinking from shot to shot. The IQ Rifle target comes with two 5” shapes and combined with the shooting cards is great for long range and CQB (Close Quarters Battle) shooting. The IQ Pistol target comes with three 3” shapes, is great for close in pistol shooting and combined with the pistol version of Dead Man’s Hand Shooting Deck, makes for an infinite number of shooting configurations next time you’re at the range. Both of these targets may be small, but they’re designed to give you multiple training options so you never get bored at the range—if that’s even a thing.
The free printable Essentials Target, just like the full-sized Essentials Target goes great with the Essential Shooting Guide. Featuring various shapes at multiple sizes, this free printable target used in conjunction with the Essential Shooting Guide will improve your range time in both quality and quantity.
Pistol targets
If you’re looking specifically for a pistol target, look for one that maximizes your time at the range, this way you’re at least maintaining your skills, if not improving them. Remember, at the end of the day, the pistol target you chose should be the one that works for you. The following is a list of three great pistol targets that will improve the quality of your training the next time you’re at the range.
1. Essentials Target
The Essentials Target is a great pistol target because it gives the shooter variety and like it says in the name, helps with an essential set of drills. These drills with help improve your pistol marksmanship by working on your slow aimed fire, weak and off hand shooting, target transition, trigger speed changes, drawing, magazine reloads and controlling multiple shot groups. With 17 courses of fire, the drills take a total of 150 rounds, and with an unlimited amount of shooting combinations; your productivity at the range will only increase.
2. Steiner CQB Target
The Steiner CQB Target is perfect for pistol shooting. Featuring a picture of a human body, shapes are placed over the normal vital sign areas. This target also includes 12 circles in various sizes along the sides of the target to help test accuracy and provide multiple training opportunities.
3. IQ Target
The IQ Target for pistols is another great option for paper pistol targets. The target is designed to make a shooter think. With a combination of varying shapes, containing numbers and letters, the shooter is able to create more complex shooting scenarios that the most competitive shooter would enjoy. Combine this target with the Dead Man’s Hand Shooting Deck, and you’re sure to add even more variety and purpose to your training. The Numbers Game, as seen below, is also a great way to combine quality training and fun to your range day while utilizing the IQ Target.
Paper Rifle targets
The Hitman Target is great for the long-range shooter, and designed specifically for that purpose, is a comprehensive zeroing and engagement system for precision marksmanship. The zeroing squares are sized from 1”-3” to maintain a MOA zero for 100, 200, and 300 yards. While this target is designed for long-range shooters, you can also use it for the 1-2-3 drill using your pistol, as seen below.
The Steiner Precision Target, made in conjunction with Steiner Optics includes a “T” box, used as a sniper qualifier by many local, state, and federal police agencies. The target also includes 1”, 2”, and 3” squares to maintain an MOA zero at 100, 200, and 300 yards.
Fun Targets
Any day at the range is always a good day, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways of making that good day a great day. Whether you’re a champion shooter or just a regular Joe wanting to work on precision and have fun, there are definitely targets out there with game themes or targets that are just plain fun to shoot at. Here are a few of those ‘fun targets’.
Dartboard Target
Darts has always been a fun bar game, now it’s a fun shooting game too. This Dartboard Target is designed specifically for fun on the range, but it will also help improve your shooting skills. The target comes with three games and instructions for keeping score if you’re competing with another shooter.
Tic-Tac-Toe
Tic-tac-toe is another game you probably aren’t used to playing at the range, but trust me it’s fun and not quite as easy as you would think. While the game uses the same concept as the pen and paper version, it’s a lot more fun and you get some valuable practice out of it—just make sure you hit the right letter.
Okay, this isn’t a game, per se, but it is fun. The Menace to Society Target Pack comes with 10 target of your most hated dictators and terrorists of the 21st century, ranging from Saddam Hussein to ISIS/ISIL. The targets also include the name, date of birth, date of death and cause of death of the guy you’re about to give a second funeral to. So, while it’s not a real game, you can definitely find a fun way to use these targets. Trust us, you’ll have a blast—literally!
Target Stands
If you’re not on a standard range, chances are you’ve had to build one, unless you’re planning to shoot into that random object over there—don’t do that, unless you want to spend the rest of your day in the ER because you were too dumb to realize shrapnel isn’t something seen just on the battlefield. If you’re the type to build your own target stand for your range, you can find instructions and a material list for building one here.
However, if you’re not the crafty type, or you just suck at basic carpentry—which is perfectly fine—you can always buy your stand. Stands come in various styles, from basic to not so basic, with some made to stand up to anything from an airsoft gun to your rifle.
Target practice
When it comes to target practice, there’s no practice better than the one that improves your skills. Whether you’re a complete beginner, who’s never touched a gun or you can’t remember the last time you didn’t have a gun in your hand; how you practice matters. The entire point of target practice is to improve—so do that and stop wasting your time just sending bullets down range. Practice with a purpose, use targets that give you variety, require you to think, force you to do something different, and above all make you better. If you’re looking to improve a certain skill, use targets that require you to practice said skill. For example, if you need to practice the essentials, get and Essentials Target.
Remember, what’s good for one person may not be what’s good for you, but unless you get out there and find out your strengths and weakness on the range, you’ll never know. With that being said, if you’re new to the world of shooting, or you came out of the womb with a rifle in your hand, RE Factor Tactical has the perfect target for you. And if you combine tools such as the Dead Man’s Hand Shooting Deck and The Essential Shooting Guide, you’ll not only gain quality training, you’ll also have a great time doing it.
